Colorado Smoke and The Great Commission -Ben Robertson
January 2, 2014
So here we are again. Another law passed that defy the foundations of Christian Values. As of January 1, 2014 it is legal, in the state of Colorado, to buy marijuana for recreational use.
Suprisingly, I haven't heard allot of opposition from the Christian right about how this is an unbiblical abomination that will cause a major setback in Christianity in America, and I wonder why.
Not that I have that view, but it seems that we hear the cries of the Christian community for our government to assume the office of biblical law on other issues such as gay marriage, abortion, and even immigration issues. not that I have THAT view either. Truth is, I don't have a view, anymore, on what the government should do at all. I mean I do, but my view is too far left behind, that the government of the United States should provide for national security and provide and maintain our monotary system, and not much else.
My issue is that the U.S. government does have laws in place to deal with this, and simply choose not to enforce them. At this point, a bill has been introduced to lax the federal law but not passed.
In 2012 the federal government opted to undermine an Arizona law to deal with immigration issues in their own state, by saying that border security, constitutionally, fell to the feds, which is true, but the feds simply chose not to enforce their own laws and thumbed their noses at the offering of Arizona to help enforce a state law that reflected the intentions of the federal law. So there's that. The summary of the Supreme Court decision can be found here: http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/06/25/scotus.arizona.pdf
What I see happening, that bothers me, is that Americans are becoming so weak-minded that we need a king instead of the complex checks and balances that our founders intended that catapulted this country to the greatest superpower on Earth in a mere two hundred years.
And, that being said, I believe the problem is a spiritual one.
We, as the Christian community, have came to a place that we want our morality legislated. We want to make it easy on ourselves to follow the law of the land instead of the commandments of Christ. I think the problem started, or took a significant jump, with the Federal Food Stamp Act of 1964. Now, before you get mad, let me be clear. I have no problem whatsoever with helping people in need, but the problem is that it's not the job of the fed, a secular group, to provide for the needs of those in need. That charge is given to the CHURCH! (James 1:27, 2:14-18 among many others) but, the feds taking this responsibility has led the church down a long and gradual road of letting them have it. Instead of doing God's work, as God's people to provide a reflection of Christ in the world (as we are charged to do) we will actually sit in a place of ministry and direct people to the help that comes from a secular government, that, in turn, is going to require those people to conform to a system that's not biblical. And then, we have the audacity to wonder why the world has gone wrong! This country is still a democratic republic, and our leaders are elected by society, so, the leaders become a reflection of that society. A society that hasn't seen the reflection of Christ in His followers. A society that has learned to find refuge in the crude attempts to provide that refuge, from a group of legislators who cannot relate to their needs. A society that has seen a reactive Christian community respond in hate and negetivity instead of a proactive Christian community reaching out as the Hand of Jesus to those in need, before the situations get desperate. A society that sees no one held accountable for anything. A society that is the product of our neglect of the simplist religious law found in any religion: Love God, Love Others, Make Disciples (Matthew 22:37-40, 28:18-20). We will not change the situations we are in, in this country, but Jesus can! When we Love God, Love others, and "Go therefore, and make disciples." Then, our leaders will become a reflection of a society built on a firm foundation, the foundation of Jesus. Then they will be personally accountable to God. Then our nation will heal!
2 Chronicles 7:14
New Living Translation (NLT)
14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
It doesn't matter what the government does. It doesnt matter what the world does. It matters what WE, the Body does!
